Commitments We Made

Bottle/can bills. Michael Maybee said he would research legislation on bottle and can deposit in other States.

Best practices. Barbara Williams said she would contact people in Charlotte, which is doing a good job combating litter.

Cooperation. Kaye Warren said she would try to get the Boone car dealers to work together to set up recycling stations on premises and become litter champions.

Collaboration. Hanes Boren said he would encourage retail establishments in Boone to communicate to customers the anti-litter message.

Education. Richard Beall said he would be responsible for ensuring that the educational effort is renewed with the public schools.

Education. Sue Counts said she would work with 4-H to reach out to youths and get them involved in the anti-litter movement.

Environment. Debra Younts of National Committee for the New River said she would help promote the Big Sweep and Litter Sweep events.

Government Partnerships. Dave Robertson said he would ensure that Watauga County's litter and solid waste containment policies and programs are customer friendly.

Spiritual Appeal. The Rev. Jim Darnell said he would counsel congregations to protect the environment and not litter.

Recycling. Loretta Clawson said she would talk to the Town of Boone about increasing the emphasis on the recycling in the community.

Corporate Citizenship. John Cooper of Mast General Store said his organization would work to increase employee awareness and involvement to participate in anti-litter programs.

Civic Involvement. John Cooper said he would work to re-institute Adopt-A-Highway clean-ups by the Boone Sunrise Rotary Club.

Civic Pride. Michael Maybee said he would work with the Watauga Opportunities clients, staff and supporters to increase the frequency of pick-ups on its Adopt-A-Highway from two times a year to four.

Interpretation of Laws. Bill Leavell said he would examine all the anti-littering statutes and product a "plain English position paper" for publication in local newspapers.

Junked Cars. Pat Wilkie said she would ensure that the junked cars ordinance was presented to the County Commissioners for action.

Enforcement. Pat Wilkie said she would work to ensure the enforcement of existing laws, regulations, ordinances regarding litter and trash.

University Involvement. Bettie Bond said she would assure that Appalachian State University gets onboard and supports the anti-litter movement.

Brag Line. Nancy Reigel said she would maintain the MountainKeepers.org "brag line" as a central command post to celebrate successes and keep interested citizens informed on the progress of the "Commitment Makers."

Broaden Our Team Membership. Nancy Reigel said she will contact the County Fire Departments to urge our volunteer firefighter heroes to decry litter.
