The community's "Stop the Litter!" initiative was recognized Tuesday
(November 26) by representatives of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, who
presented a Quality of Life Award to the MountainKeepers organization.
"Few groups have accomplished so much in so little time as the MountainKeepers
have this fall," said Mike Wagoner, Chamber president.
"It all began in September, when the Town of Boone and Watauga County both
declared it to be 'Stop the Litter! Month' in our communities," he said.
"A 'Please Do Not Litter' logo was developed, stickers were prepared, and
then as a stroke of brilliance, the initiative enlisted the services of Mother
Nature to make it hers and your business to change the culture - and keep the
environment clean of litter."
Wagoner recalled a comment made at the initial gathering of community leaders
to address litter on September 4. "Someone said, 'We live in a disposable
society today.'
"Clearly, we do have more opportunities to litter than prior generations....but
that also means we have more reasons why not to.
"At the Chamber," Wagoner said, "we have adopted a theme for
this year - 'Change is inevitable. Progress is optional.' Thanks to everyone
involved for making progress.
"Together, we can 'Stop the Litter!'"
The Chamber's Quality of Life Awards program is co-sponsored by the Watauga
Democrat and Charter Communications. It seeks to recognize groups and organizations
in the community that are helping make a difference and improve the quality
of life for all citizens.
