Stop the Litter
Kick off Breakfast
7:00 am - 8:30 am September 4, 2002
Agricultural Conference Center
As residents of Watauga County,
the members of MountainKeepers truly believe that we are privileged to live
in the "home of Mother Nature." We imagine you feel the same way.
Sadly, along with the natural beauty of our county we are seeing a disturbing amount of roadside trash. Private citizens and public officials have drawn our attention to this problem in our local press. One estimate of the amount of this blemish on the landscape is that it exceeds 29 tons per year!
The question has to be asked: What can those of us in leadership roles do together to stem the tide of this threat to our economy, our environment, and our quality of life?
As a step toward answering that question, we are hosting a breakfast dialogue on September 4th at the Agriculture Conference Center in Boone. If you wish to come, you will be in the company of numerous other community leaders representing the soul of Watauga County, from volunteer firefighters and clergy to teachers, students, and business owners.
As conveners of this dialogue, The MountainKeepers are hopeful that during this breakfast we can identify together a set of actions that will lead to measurable reductions in roadside trash. Certainly the late summer Litter Sweep in which many of us participate each year will help in the short term. As importantly, in our view, are strategic and systemic steps we can take together that will outlive such periodic efforts, and in fact, make them less necessary over time.
We hope you are with us in this undertaking, and can join us on September 4th. We are inspired by the words of Margaret Mead when she observed, "Never doubt that a small band of committed people can change the world. Indeed, that is all that ever has."
The breakfast will begin at 7:00 a.m. and conclude by 8:30.
